Tired of boiling the *hello* out of your egg? Is the yolk dry with a ring of grey on the outside? Is the egg white too rubbery? Or is the yolk running like it just got a brand new pair of tennis shoes?

First you need to decide if you want to soft boil or hard boil the egg. Soft boiled eggs tend to have a runny, very deep yellow center. On the other hand, hard boiled eggs are bit firmer and don’t have a runny center. It’s totally based on preferences or even on what you’re eating the egg with. A runny yolk partners great with toast or rice, but a hard center makes for great snack or breakfast all by itself.

Try these niffy tricks and tips below to get the best boiled egg.

You need to start by setting your eggs out so that they can start adjusting to room temperature. This doesn’t really need to take forever. Just while you get the other steps ready.

Fill a pot with water just so that there is a enough to cover all the eggs (but don’t add the eggs just yet). Boil the water so that it reaches a roiling boil, and remove then pot from the heat so that it stops bubbling.

Use tongs or a spoon to gently add the eggs to the hot water. Be careful not to drop them into the water because this could cause them to crack. We don’t want the water to be boiling right now because this could cause the eggs to bounce around and break open.

Once you’ve added all the eggs bring the pot back to the burner and make sure the water begins to boil. Since the water was already very hot when you put the eggs in, it should start to boil again pretty quickly.

Now comes the tough part: deciding how long to cook them. Anywhere from 6-10 minutes is going to have an egg yolk that is softer, and 11 to 14 minutes will make the egg yolk firmer. You don’t want to under cook and get sick or over cook and get grey, dried out yolks.
